Below are a sampling of courses and workshops that I’ve put together over the last 10 years. In most courses, especially the most recent ones, there’s a heavy emphasis on team-based experiential learning projects.

Lilie! at the Disco
(Rice University)

For graduate students. A day trip to Austin with a startup site visit and guest speaker, lunch and a workshop at a coworking space, and a panel of founders. In collaboration with Taylor Anne Adams, Mercy Harper, and Kyle Judah.

New Enterprises: Discovery
(Rice University)

For undergraduate students. An opportunity identification course that starts with what you’re good at, what you care about, and what you notice the world needs.

Bias and Medical Device Design
(Rice University)

For undergraduate students. A course where we explore physical, computational, and interpretation bias in medical devices. In collaboration with Sabia Abidi and Ruchika Mitbander.

Change Maker Summit v. 3.0
(Rice University)

For pre-matriculation undergraduate students. A workshop designed to introduce students to the entrepreneurial mindset. Redesigned to be a one day experience the day before students move into their dorms. In collaboration with Kyle Judah, Micaela McGlone, Sofi Aguilera, Patrick Ray, and the rest of the Liu Idea Lab for Innovation and Entrepreneurship team.

Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen International Summer Experience in Engineering Design (iSEED - Amsterdam)

For undergraduate students, primarily in engineering. A summer study abroad program in Amsterdam where students collaborate with the University of Amsterdam and the Avans School of Applied Sciences on multiple design challenges. In collaboration with Lien de Cuyper and Bart Jaartsveld.

Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen International Summer Experience in Engineering Design (iSEED - Paris)

For undergraduate students, primarily in engineering. A summer study abroad program in Paris where students came up with ideas, interviewed customers, and tested out their ideas in the field. In collaboration with Doug Schuler.

Tech Product Management
(Rice University)

For MBA students. Proposed and advised the creation of Rice University’s first product management course. In collaboration with Carol Tyger.

2020

Change Maker Summit v. 2.0
(Rice University)

For pre-matriculation undergraduate students. A workshop designed to introduce students to the entrepreneurial mindset. Redesigned to be virtual in 2020. In collaboration with Caitlin Bolaños and the Liu Idea Lab for Innovation and Entrepreneurship team.

Product Management Bootcamp

For learning the fundamentals of product management and user-centered software product design.

2019

New Enterprise
(Rice University Online)

For students enrolled in Rice University’s online MBA program. The first entrepreneurship offering in the program, where students form teams and collaborate virtually to develop a plan for a new venture. This course was designed prior to the pandemic, which made the transition to fully online easier for future courses.

Science and Engineering of Launching Startups Bootcamp

For graduate science and engineering students. A bootcamp on commercializing technologies. In collaboration with Jamie Jones.

Change Maker Summit

Global Field Experience v. 2.0

For MBA students. A course where students work in teams assessing the viability of expanding an existing US-based business into another country. Includes a week-long immersion in another country. Served as faculty lead for all 3 sections of the full-time MBA program. In-country faculty for Lima, Peru. In collaboration with Al Danto, Yael Hochberg, Abbey Hartgrove, and Kelly Vlaskamp.

Healthcare Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab
(Rice University)

For medical device venture teams composed of MBA students, Masters of Bioengineering students, and Baylor College of Medicine clinicians. Follow-on for Healthcare Innovation and Entrepreneurship course established in 2017. Focused on business plan development. In collaboration with Will Clifton, Yael Hochberg, and Farzad Soleimani.

Global Field Experience v. 1.0

For MBA students. A course where students work in teams to solve challenges with large companies, municipalities, and small startup businesses. Includes a week-long immersion in Brazil. In collaboration with Abby Larson and the Rice Business Global staff.

Healthcare Innovation and Entrepreneurship
(Rice University)

For MBA students, Masters of Bioengineering students, and Baylor College of Medicine clinicians. A course where students work in interdisciplinary teams to validate and scope clinical needs, ideate solutions and draft a business model. In collaboration with Yael Hochberg, Eric Richardson, and Farzad Soleimani.

Houston Design Thinking Workshop

For Houstonians interested in learning design thinking, a free workshop that applies design thinking using project-based learning. In collaboration with Matthew Wettergreen.

Entrepreneurship Success Initiative Workshop

For startups as part of a study by researchers at Rice University and MIT. The study tracks a large panel of startups over 2 years to identify what factors, decisions, training and background experiences contribute to successful startup outcomes.

Dilemmas in Founding New Ventures

For MBA students. A course that examines frameworks for making informed decisions about human capital when founding a new venture, including co-founders, early hires, advisors, board members, and investors. In collaboration with Roberto Moctezuma.

Lilie Design Thinking

For undergraduate students. A course where student teams work on solving real-world challenges through user-centered design.

Lilie New Venture Challenge
(Rice University)

For undergraduate student venture teams. A lab-style course where teams develop their venture plans and receive mentorship from entrepreneurs, investors, and subject matter experts.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Design II
(University of Houston)

For undergraduate engineering students. Redesigned the second semester of the capstone electrical and computer engineering design course to include entrepreneurship. In collaboration with Diana de la Rosa-Pohl.

Foundations of Entrepreneurship: Toolkit
(Rice University)

For undergraduate students. An experiential course on entrepeneurship where students form teams and create venture plans, paired with an introduction to financial modeling. In collaboration with Danielle Supkis-Cheek.

Design Practice and Business

For industrial design undergraduate students. An introductory course that provides an overview of the early stages of venture creation and case students from design-driven firms.
